The Leo Solar Eclipse drops us into our hearts and the Pisces Lunar Eclipse reveals shockers! Let Venus bridge the gap...

August Astrology
August is eclipse month and there is an eery feeling in the air. August's eclipses - Total Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 12 and a Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces on August 28 - are capable of framing the past in a totally new light and revealing different parts of ourselves. Eclipses always come in pairs and they tend to accelerate events.
This could be a month of shocking change and sudden developments - a radically new perspective.
We also have a powerful 'Full Mercury' this month, revealing key facts, all at the same time of the Partial Lunar Eclipse (that's when Mercury direct conjuncts the Sun). And Mars, Mercury and Venus are all strong: Mercury and Venus in their signs of rulership (Virgo and Libra respectively), and Mars (although in fall in Cancer) is out of bounds and feeling extra rebellious.
Venus is an Evening Star and very bright in the darkening sky. This is not an every day sight, when Venus is at her furthest elongation ahead of the Sun, and even rarer during the late summer months.
We are witnessing the Evensong of an Old World.
Let's dive deeper into August Astrology.
Check out, Venus, the Solar Eclipse, the Lunar Eclipse / Full Mercury combo, and a play by play of the August Calendar week by week…
Venus Evening Star: The Evensong of the Old World

Venus the Evening Star
Venus is in her Evening Star phase, shining alone and bright in the night sky, and setting well after nightfall. Enjoy her rare, beautiful, crystal-clear light in the dark evening sky.
This is her Evensong.
Our old choices and preferences are quietly slipping away soon to renew themselves in the coming autumn.
This month is significant because Venus is fast approaching her retrograde phase. She will enter her retrograde shadow on 31 August, spending all of September in uncertain terrain that she will have to later re-evaluate.
August is Venus’s last strong month for a while. It is a moment of mature choices.
Venus is currently at her maximum elongation (nearly 46°) ahead of the Sun. She is at her greatest distance and objectivity. This frees up our choices from the usual dictates of the ego so we can more calmly assess what we desire. But it can also be a strangely dispassionate time. A time when we can appreciate things in and of themselves, without ‘lust for result’.
Enjoy, observe, appreciate.
Venus will soon be brought back in line.
From 31 August the Sun begins catching up with Venus as she enters her retrograde shadow.
Venus in Libra August 6th
From August 6th Venus is in Libra, her own sign, where she will remain until 10 September.
Venus in Libra is the time to connect with others, build bridges, and enjoy love, friendship and culture. This is a time to seek ease and address any disharmony or imbalance.
Crucially, Venus will return to Libra 25 October - 4 December during her retrograde phase. Relationships, diplomacy, civilisation itself - these are topics that will concern us deeply now and all the way into December.
Venus enters her retrograde shadow at the end of Libra on August 31st; she enters Scorpio on 10th September and goes retrograde on 3rd October at only about 27° ahead of the Sun at 9° Scorpio, before backtracking back into Libra on 25th October. She turns direct again on 14 November at 23° Libra, finally re-entering Scorpio on December 4th and exiting her retrograde shadow mid-December. That's a long journey. And it begins August 31st!
This gives us all of August - with Venus direct, out of shadow, and in her sign of rulership, shining her mature, strong evening light to help us make wise decisions, and build supportive bridges.
Venus and the Total Solar Eclipse
Venus’ story becomes particularly important around the first eclipse. From August 10th all the way to August 21st, Venus touches base with every big player in the heavens: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto! This, in a beautiful little sequence which activates the Uranus-Neptune-Pluto triangle in the sky. This activates is the much-talked about opportunity for a human renaissance. Of course, it is an opportunity, not a given.
This Uranus-Neptune-Pluto triangle in the sky is a little like a cup or grail of golden potential, holding sacred space for us to fill.
It offers us a chance to stabilise our consciousness at a better set point collectively as a species, now and until 2028-29. And that's what Venus activates during this eclipse, connecting our hearts desires straight into that cup of potentiality, helping us better measure our choices.
Venus trines Pluto and opposes Neptune on 10th August, creating powerful bonds, opening deep pockets and filling the world with a strange yearning.
The Venus -Neptune opposition is exactly activated by the Total Solar Eclipse, giving intense, painful definition to our deepest yearnings.
Then, on the 12th, Venus trines Uranus for some extra excitement, handing over the baton over to Mercury, who joins the whole concert to help carry her message through.
This exchange touch solid ground until 17th-21st August when Venus sextiles Jupiter and opposes Saturn, helping us distil what's truly important. The 17th brings hope, and the 21st tests and crystallises our choices to fine-tune our discernment - a skill we will need for Venus’ upcoming retrograde this October-November.
This makes the middle of August, and the total solar eclipse which connects right into our hearts, an important time for mature choices in our relationships, investments, and alliances.
August 12th Total Solar Eclipse in Leo: The Heart of the Matter

The first great turning point of August arrives on 12 August with a Total Solar Eclipse at 20°01’ Leo, the sun’s very own sign, and the sign ruling the heart.
This is a New Moon eclipse, which means a fresh start. But it is also a South Node eclipse, dredging up the past — the point of karmic returns.
So here we have a new beginning with something long overdue. A reframe of the past.
Seeing the past in a new light changes our perspective. And this is the only thing that can truly change anything.
This eclipse is total.
We have no choice but to sit up and pay attention. All the world is a stage. And this is the dramatic beginning of the final act.
This eclipse shines a light on hidden aspects of our hearts, especially those parts we have ignored or overlooked. It clears the stage so what was always there can be seen. It addresses the heart of the matter. And it's a poignant moment.
A wide trine to Saturn is the only major aspect of the eclipse, indicating the longevity of the seeds now planted. Saturn is making sure we take the message of this eclipse seriously and build upon it.
Radical truths are now coming to light, calling us toward growth.
The Total Solar Eclipse Nodal Reversal: Look back to 2017
First, it serves to look back nine years ago, when the Lunar Nodes were in Leo and Aquarius once more, but in the reversed position.
This reveals important seeds that were planted back then that are now revealing their full fruit.
That takes us to 2017.
Something strange and unfamiliar began back then that is now revealing its nature. Have a think. What was that in your own life in 2017? Especially the summer? You are now presented with the flip side of that - a 'fait accompli.'
Funnily, 2017 was also Trump’s first year in office...
All that transpired back then is now coming full circle. Fait accompli.
Leo Eclipse Saros Cycle: Look back to 2008
Second, eclipses come in Saros Cycles. These are eclipse families that repeat in regular intervals for over a thousand years. Each family stems from an ur-eclipse with a specific configuration - or flavour - and repeats its own particular themes every eighteen years.
Saros Cycles tell us something about the nature of the eclipse itself. This August's eclipses belong to a family that brings powerful breakthroughs, transformation, technological developments and intense communications.
This is a time when solutions are revealed. A time to act without delay and put plans into action.
This particular family of eclipses was last active in August 2008.
That is, 2008 was the last time we had these powerful themes activated.
2008 is also the last time we had South Node eclipses in Leo - the same as we have today - and the last time we had this area of our lives activated in such a karmically loaded way.
Leo New Moon Metonic Cycle: Look to 2007
It is also worth looking at the so-called Metonic Lunar Cycle. (Yes, astrology is nothing but a highly intricate interplay of cycles!)
The Metonic cycle marks not eclipses but exact lunation positions in the sky. This type of cycle repeats every nineteen years, taking us back to 2007.
In mid-August 2007 we had a Leo New Moon in the same position in the sky, at around 20° Leo but without creating an eclipse! What was going on for you back then?
This will tell you something about the precise area of your psyche being activated right now - only this time far more powerfully, as you are experiencing an eclipse!
Can you cast your mind back? Can you weave these two dates together? August 2007 and August 2008? This moment is especially important if 20° Leo directly triggers your own planets and points.
Total Solar Eclipse in Leo Sabian Symbol: Intoxicated Chickens...
And of course, let’s not forget the Sabian Symbol for this eclipse, (Sabian Symbols being a widely used series of images for each zodiacal degree channelled in the early part of the 20th century, among others).
The Sabian Symbol for this Total Solar Eclipse at the 21st degree of Leo is rather evocative:
Intoxicated Chickens dizzily flap their wings trying to fly.
A symbol of the early stirring of greater consciousness and the confusion it brings...
Sounds rather apt, given the monumental threshold humanity finds itself at. We are at the brink of major technological developments that can endager our species, shocking political and galactic revelations we may not be ready for, and an urgent spiritual awakening, likely a matter of survival. No wonder we're in a hurry!
Leo Total Solar Eclipse Gene Key / Hexagram: Youthful Folly
Finally, it’s worth looking at the so called Gene Key (corresponding to an I Ching Hexagram, or a Gate in Human Design terms) that this eclipse activates. (These systems are rather recent developments that have great merit and are worth researching.)
The August 12th eclipse activates Gene Key 4, corresponding to the I Ching hexagram of Youthful Folly - rather reminiscent of the chickens don't you think?
Somewhere beyond our wilful blindness, confusion, immaturity and overall inability to process what's happening, lies the potential for true enlightenment.
This is a Leo eclipse. And true understanding (and, ultimately, forgiveness) doesn't just arise in the mind but needs to pass through the heart.
This eclipse opens that portal.
Leo Total Solar Eclipse Visibility
Note that this solar eclipse is visible in Europe and the UK! A rare thing indeed...
Many total solar eclipses pass miles away from any of us in the old world (for example through Antarctica).
Not this one.
The old world is changing…
The total eclipse is visible in Spain, but also partly in Portugal, while a partial eclipse is visible across the UK, Canada, Greenland, Russia, much of Europe and the US East Coast.
Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces and “Full Mercury” in Virgo: The Truth Will Set You Free!

Pisces Full Moon Lunar Eclipse
The second great turning point of August arrives on the 28th with a Partial Lunar Eclipse at 4°54’ Pisces.
This is a Full Moon eclipse. Something is finally revealed and understood. A seed blossoms into a powerful realisation moment.
This is when the penny drops.
This is a North Node eclipse. So this moment of clarity puts us in unfamiliar territory. It clears the path of debris and pulls us forward.
Because the eclipse is in deep-feeling Pisces, there is a heightening of sensitivity, as a path toward greater empathy and unity consciousness.
Crucially, the eclipse is exactly square Uranus.
And right here we have the big shock factor! Disconcerting truth. Shock. Liberation.
A total break with the past.
The final piece of this puzzle is the Sun-Mercury superior conjunction - a 'Full Mercury' - in Mercury's own sign in Virgo.
Mercury's presence only intensifies the sharp mental shock of clarity and revelation...
Is this a wake-up call?
A lucid dream moment?
The Solar Eclipse opens a portal. The Lunar Eclipse reveals a truth.
Mercury in Virgo Conjunct the Sun
This eclipse carries a distinctly medical, physical, biological, or somatic dimension.
And that’s down to Mercury and the Sun in Virgo.
On August 25, three days prior to the eclipse, Mercury conjuncts the South Node in Leo, then enters Virgo and trines Chiron. Then, on August 27, Mercury’s Superior Conjunction with the Sun brings a powerful moment of clarity.
All becomes clear.
There is something inevitable about what is coming through now. News long overdue. News with a 'karmic' feel... About corrupt leadership; but more importantly about our bodies, health and systemic infrastructure, about wounding and healing.
Time to listen to the body’s wisdom and record the truth of our biological being.
This conjunction - eclipse combo is the culmination of Mercury’s retrograde cycle.
Any confusion we suffered over the last couple of months now clears (since Mercury retrograde in Cancer in July).
Ditto with a longer time frame:
Crucially, we now also get the full picture of a deeper story that was obfuscated as far back as four years ago, in 2022, during Mercury’s last retrograde in the sign of Virgo.
This is a moment of stark realisations. And the eclipse-Mercury combo embosses these realisations deeply into our consciousness.
The exact square to Uranus (by Sun, Moon and Mercury) only adds to the huge shock factor that these sudden news, realisations and surprises bring.
Mercury will only stay in Virgo for a couple of weeks until September 10th. Make the most of Mercury's superb powers of analysis and intellectual rigour during that short period!
Pisces Lunar Eclipse: Nodal, Saros, and Metonic Cycles
This Pisces Lunar Eclipse allows you to make a fresh start where events nine years ago may have closed a door to you.
This eclipse signifies the fullness of time, after nine years, that finally allows you to move forward and explore new horizons.
The Saros and Metonic Cycles of this Pisces Lunar eclipse are as for the solar one:
This is a time for urgent action, breakthrough and initiative.
Look to August 2008 for the last time this powerful family of eclipses was making itself known to you.
And look to August 2007 for extra clues around particular aspects of your word that this eclipse might draw to attention, albeit in a more powerful way.
The flavour is 2008.
But 2007 adds definition.
This is especially so if you have planets or points at 5° of the mutable signs
Pisces Lunar Eclipse Sabian Symbol: A Church Bazaar
The Pisces 5° Lunar Eclipse Sabian Symbol is:
A Church Bazaar.
This is a rather bizarre yet commonplace image of everyday human exchange and commerce, all sanctioned by religious authority. It's a form of ritualised beneficence, bringing with it the notions of formal ritual, moral authority and a community coming together. Spiritual ideals are there, at least in potentia...
Pisces Lunar Eclipse Gene Key: Freedom and Abundance
This eclipse activates Gene Key 55, signifying an awakening, and a break for freedom - very apt, given that the eclipse exactly squares Uranus.
This eclipse also carries the potential to put an end to blaming, complaining and generally victim consciousness - a distinctly Piscean ill...
Gene Key 55 is titled The Dragonfly’s Dream, a highly evocative image of what humanity could be, the transformation being latent, inherent and awaiting to unfold within our own DNA. (R. Rudd, the creator of the Gene Keys has much to say about Key 55, holding it in a special place for humanity. Look it up if it interests you.)
As for the 55th I Ching Hexagram, it is that of Fullness / Abundance, telling us to unapologetically be “as the sun at noon”...
Jupiter, ruler of hope, expansion and potential, rules Pisces. And this eclipse is all about our potential. This potential now stirs...
Pisces Partial Lunar Eclipse Visibility
The Partial Lunar Eclipse is visible in most of the western world with maximum visibility over the USA East Coast, Canada, Mexico, and all of the Americas.
The first half of the partial eclipse is visible in the UK in the early hours of the morning just as the Moon sets.
Again, it’s largely the west that seems due for an upgrade…
Eclipse Summary
And so the two eclipses tell a coherent story. The Solar Eclipse asks us to return to the heart, to reframe the past and begin again. The Lunar Eclipse shows us crucial truths we have been missing, realigning us with the body, and opening us up spiritually to the unfamiliar.
One eclipse opens. The other reveals. The world accelerates. A big month.

A long journey of reclaiming our physicality, biology and connection with nature is just beginning.
August 5 — Mars sextiles Eris (07:36 BST)
Opportunity for direct action.

August 11 — Mars enters Cancer (09:30 BST)
Mars remains in Cancer until 28 September. Time to go on the defence.
A deeply protective time begins when our first priority is to safeguard our turf and provide shelter, protection and nurturing to what and whom we care for.
Mars in Cancer can be rather tribal or cliquey. But he can also be at his finest as a powerful protector, only rising up when riled. Play for the defence.
August 12 — Mercury opposite Pluto, trine Neptune sextile Uranus (02:19 BST - 04:38 BST - 21:47 BST)
The mind focuses sharply while inspiration flows. Tackle that difficult mental task - get it done.

The month’s Total Solar Eclipse in Leo.
It clears noise and projections so what was always in our hearts can finally show itself - especially parts or truths we have ignored or overlooked.
The body feels such eclipses strongly and it is an eery, unsettling feeling!
13 August - Mercury sextile Venus (17:22 BST)
An opportunity for beautiful exchanges in thought, word and deed; poetry. Connect, converse and exchange ideas and preferences.
August 15 — Mercury conjunct Jupiter, (12:22 BST)
A wonderful moment of optimism, clarity and big vision. Words might exaggerate just a bit now. But it’s okay. It’s not about facts or promises; it’s about painting a big enough picture to excite us and light our way forward.
(If Mercury is your ruling planet, use this moment to write, speak, imagine or put forth your most ambitious plans!)
Third Week — August 17–23: A Time of Initiatives and Clarifications
Following last week’s unveiling of what the heart already knew, this week is when things begin to crystallise in our mind and affections. We’re in mid-eclipses and the whole atmosphere is eery. Take a moment… For the final week of August could shock us all into unknown territory.

August 22 — Sun conjunct South Node, 23:03 BST
A karmic moment: whatever our goals or purpose in life, we must check with the past to make sure we’re not forgetting something.
Pay your dues, collect your reward and pick up any forgotten parts of your heart to take them forward.
August 23 — Sun enters Virgo, 03:18 BST
Virgo season is here. Happy Birthday Virgo!
A time of work, preparation and attention to detail! The harvest approaches and every little mistake could have huge repercussions down the line. So get to it and pay attention! Or at least that’s how it used to be when we lived closer to nature here in the northern hemisphere… Hence Virgo’s intensely focused and perfectionist nature.
Enjoy this earthy period of high focus, productivity and fine-tuning, as we entrain ourselves to the subtle rhythms of nature, that can heal both our bodies and the physical world.
August 23 — Mercury trines Eris, 10:38 BST
Confrontational, ‘in your face’ exchanges.
August 23 — Sun trines Chiron, 20:30 BST
A moment of acceptance, healing and the releasing of resistance.
Fourth Week — August 24–31: Clearing the Path to an Unknown Future
And now we come to the final August week containing this month’s second eclipse: a Full Moon Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces. This is not only exactly square Uranus in Gemini; it is also opposite a Full Mercury - that is Mercury’s Superior Conjunction with the Sun in Virgo. What a little moment of the perfect storm! This is a time of shocking truths and revelations, of stark clarity, clearing the path ahead of debris.
August 25 — Mercury conjuncts South Node, enters Virgo, and trines Chiron (10:04 BST - 12:04 BST - 19:57 BST)
The week begins as it means to go on, with key news and communications! News long overdue. Meetings and news have a karmic feel.
With Mercury in Virgo, its sign of both rulership and exaltation, until September 10th the mind is firing on all cylinders. This will only last a couple of weeks! There is detailed work to do to analyse the situation and ascertain the facts.
August 27 — Mercury-Sun Superior Conjunction (18:03 BST)
This is Mercury’s Superior Conjunction with the Sun - a Full Mercury in its sign of exaltation, Virgo. And it is rolled into the Pisces Lunar Eclipse and the Uranus square arriving tomorrow. A moment or truth! A shock.
Here we have a stark, merciless moment of clarity!
August 28 — Partial Lunar Eclipse at 4°54’ Pisces (05:18 BST)
The month’s second eclipse, a Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces, arrives to take the truths revealed right now and use them to change our consciousness. The penny drops.
Here we have a portal into the unknown. A spiritual upgrade. And a chance to up-level the whole way we handle our journey on the earth. This is a lucid moment.
August 28 — Mercury & Sun square Uranus (08:24–23:18 BST)
The Uranus square occurs on the same day as the eclipse, as first the Moon, then Mercury, then finally the Sun all square Uranus in quick succession.
This is a psycho-spiritual prison break! The truth is finally out. And it sets us free.
August 31 — Jupiter trines Saturn (23:17 BST)
Still reeling from the shock of the eclipses, we now get one of those rare beneficial aspects: Jupiter trines Saturn across the fire signs Leo and Aries.
The perfect moment to combine strategy with vision, the lessons of the past with the adventure of the future. A time to learn from past mistakes, retain our confidence and take the lead of our lives, responsibly.
Put your vision into practice, take a calculated risk, and make a bold warrior’s start.
September 1st and Beyond
Mars squares Saturn almost immediately, on September 1, applying the brakes to any impulsive notions. This moment requires discipline and stamina.
But with Mercury sextile Mars too, ideas have legs!. Go for the most productive communications and exchanges!
