December marks the end of an era. The Sagittarius New Moon just before the Solstice urges us to turn our mind's eye toward an unfamiliar future.

December Astrology 2025
After the free flowing energies of November, December is a sombre time. Pressures are high now, things are nearing the finish line, and something has to give.
December is a bit of a squeeze: Saturn and Neptune are now squeezing the last remnants of this old and creaky world out of our bones and preparing us for the unknown.
For 2026 heralds a brand new world, a new beginning, a new adventure. And December is the time to LET GO; to embrace whatever may come, and open ourselves up to new experience. This is a time of release, vulnerability and acceptance.
This is imprinted upon us in no uncertain terms around the Solstice, which arrives on the 21st. We have a Sagittarius New Moon on the 20th, square both Saturn and Neptune, as December's astrology prepares us for the powerful energies coming through in January.
A Sagittarius Month with Jupiter in Cancer: Inner Vision
December is Sagittarius’ month. It is a forward-looking month that encourages us to open up to new experiences and nurture our vision for the future.
There is a Stellium (i.e. a glut of planets) gathering up in Sagittarius with the Sun, Mars, Venus, Mercury and, later, the New Moon. Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius, is strong right now, exalted in Cancer, and in trine to Saturn and Neptune.
This, again, emphasises the powerful emotions currently flowing through us and the importance of nurturing what makes us feel secure, summons greater abundance, and connects us to our true spiritual source.
Jupiter is also square to Chiron (and Eris) and this is where this intense vulnerability comes from. There is a real cry for an authentic life right now. No use pretending; no use living a life that doesn’t represent who we are.
Various hurts might move through our lives this month to be released, alongside a redressing of any long-running slights and injustices.
This Sagittarius-Cancer juxtaposition is an interesting one. Sagittarius is a globalist sign and Cancer is concerned with home and family. The contrast is strong. Whether you are trying to navigate global developments whilst retaining a sense of home, safety and national identity, or whether you love to globe-trot and are struggling to build a nest or connect with family in the process, these are matters to contemplate this month.
A Strong Saturn and Neptune in Pisces
With Saturn-Neptune sailing together in the dregs of Pisces too, there is a sense of old structures weakening… Something is being bled dry, like the leeches of old that were used to reduce a fever, the life is drained out of the old reality, ready for rebirth.
The best we can do now is accept what must be done whilst turning our spiritual sights toward a longer term vision.
Stay strong and do the work. For we have some incredibly forceful initiatives coming through in January, with multiple conjunctions involving Mars, and later Pluto in Aquarius, just as Neptune also enters warrior Aries.
Something big is in the works! Use December to clear away any spiritual debris ready for a fresh start.
This is also a great month for literal or astral journeys, creative and spiritual pursuits.
Gemini Full Moon December 4th-5th: Crossroad, Crisis, Catharsis!
December enters under considerable stress with a Gemini Full Moon on December 4th-5th only a few days after Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, stations direct in Scorpio.
Early December is a time of intense release of all the fears, negative energies and old toxicity that Mercury dug up during his retrograde period in November.
This Gemini New Moon also marks the half-way point between eclipses, so it is a crossroads of sorts, moving us forward. Time to release the past and open up to the future. With Neptune, Saturn and the North Node all in Pisces right now, December’s challenges require a spiritual approach. (Read more on the Gemini Full Moon)
Mercury trine Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune 6th-7th: A Productive Time
Things smooth over pretty quickly afterwards. For Mercury, the ruler of the Gemini Full Moon finds himself among wonderful company. December 6th-7th is a wonderful, productive weekend with the Moon and Mercury both on top form, in a grand trine to Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune.
Good news arrive, connections and conversations go well and a secure foundation can be built for future interactions. Make the most of it!
Mars, square Saturn / Neptune Direct / Mercury in Sagittarius December 9th-11th: Tighten…and Release!
Things get tough on the 9th when Mars squares Saturn and something calls for military discipline on our part. Time to work hard and get things done!
Climb that mountain! Mars is now making his way to square Neptune, which is breathless in the skies, about to station direct on December 10th. This adds to the sense of release after the tension of Mars-Saturn, making the 10th an ‘exhale’ moment.
This is a highly poignant time - an avalanche of feeling is flowing through us as right now, we prepare to release the past and let the tides carry it to where they may.
Watch these days and take good care.
This is also when November’s riptide (and deeply bonding energy) starts tapering off, as Mercury exits Scorpio and enters Sagittarius on the 11th. Mercury clears his shadow by the 15th, with the Moon crossing the riptide waters one last time on the 16th-17th for good measure - and that’s when our mind is released to entertain new thoughts. Mercury begins travelling fast now, crossing Sagittarius in a mere two weeks.
With Mercury in Sagittarius, use December 15th-30th to visualise the future, travel, experiment, learn, share information, and have exploratory conversations.
By the 15th, Mars also finally squares off with Neptune. Time to let go and accept what - if anything - cannot be changed. Those are not easy days for mundane matters. But they do lend themselves to spiritual work, service, creative endeavours, and to doing what remains to be done.
Mars in Capricorn, Mercury out of Shadow, December 15th
From the 15th we’re in a period of decisive action and initiative as Mars enters Capricorn, his sign of exaltation. Mercury exits his retrograde shadow by the 16th-17th too, and whatever plagued our minds since mid-October now releases its grip.
We now know where we stand and can begin to take action and expand our thinking into new territories.
The 17th is a reality-check moment when the Sun squares Saturn - a clear definition of boundaries, duties and responsibilities, as well as working within whatever limits happen to be here at the moment and drawing inspiration for help. Optimism could take a dip now. Just do what you must and leave major decisions for another day.
Sagittarius New Moon & Capricorn Solstice December 20th-21st: Fly Straight Even In Stormy Weather!
And so we arrive at the 20th-21st the Sagittarius New Moon (20th) and December Solstice (21st). This is the time when the penny finally drops and we know where we need to let go and where we need to step up. These are by no means easy energies to work through.
Time to do what’s necessary and long overdue, releasing the past to make way for something new, finetuning our navigational system in the process. We can achieve a lot now with the right combination of discipline, realism, compassion and imagination.
The Solstice - and Capricorn season - arrives on December 21st at 15:03GMT, igniting our will and desire to move forward with greater strength. (More on the Sagittarius New Moon.)
Venus squares Neptune and enters Capricorn December 24th: Festive Traditions
The holidays arrive amidst a wistful mist as Venus squares Neptune then enters Capricorn on the 24th.
Nostalgia blends with deep romantic or spiritual yearning for one intense moment before we opt for more traditional values to underpin the festive season.
Mercury in Capricorn, January 1st: Time to Talk Shop
It’s Mercury’s turn to get busy in the run up to New Year’s, with a square to Saturn on the 30th and Neptune on the 1st. Fanciful ideas will soon give way to realism.
Time to plan, talk shop and do some serious thinking.
Don’t let negative thoughts get to you - they’re just passing through. Just put your head down and do some work, calculations or planning. Use your imagination in a positive manner, and work through whatever it is that has your attention for best energy use.
Say Good Bye to 2025: A New World is Dawning
This month is truly a time of endings, a time to do some thinking, meditate, contemplate, visualise the future, examine the past, and let it all go.
With lots of planets in mutable signs Sagittarius and Pisces, adaptability is key.
Stay flexible and ready to roll...
Jupiter not only rules Sagittarius but also co-rules Pisces, and he’s in homey Cancer right now. Home and family are especially highlighted this year, which is great for the holiday season. Expect a warm intimate time. The focus is on home, land, family, tribe and on spending time with our nearest and dearest.
With Jupiter square Chiron right now, there is a strong need to address any slights and injustices, to air grievances and to demand greater room to move and live an authentic life.
Authenticity and honesty are key this holiday season.
Time to decide where our true home is, what truly nurtures us and makes us feel secure enough to be creative and to call forth greater abundance.
Many things are being washed away with the tides this month. Let whatever goes go and look for pearls in the sand.
A Heads Up For January 2026
A bunch of planets start to gather in Capricorn from the 24th onwards - Mars, Venus and the Sun, with Mercury joining them on January 1st.
These holidays mean business.
The time has come to get serious about whatever is in the works.
The energy build up begins to peak already by the Cancer Full Moon of January 3rd, with further powerful decisive moments arriving on January 6th, 8th, 9th, 18th (and the Capricorn New Moon), 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 26th (when Neptune enters Aries!) and 27th.
What a time! This is only the beginning…
DECEMBER LUNATIONS
Gemini Full Moon, December 4th-5th:
The Gemini Full Moon arrives at 23:13GMT on 4th December at 13:03 degrees (the 14th degree of Gemini). It is exactly square the Lunar Nodes and widely opposite Mars, representing a tough little crossroads moment.
Mercury, ruler of this lunation, is still finding his feet past his retrograde phase and all sorts of toxic material is now released. Better out than in!
Mercury is widely opposite Uranus, helping to make this a quick release, and he is building up to a grand water trine with Jupiter and Saturn/Neptune, ensuring a positive outcome and healing and productive weekend ahead.
Gemini Full Moon Sabian Symbol For Contemplation: Bridging physical space and social distinctions, two men communicate telepathically. The keyword here is ‘transcendence’.
Sagittarius New Moon, December 20th:
December’s Sagittarius New Moon arrives in the early hours of 20th December at 01:42GMT at 28:24 degrees (the 29th degree of Sagittarius).
This is a challenging but healing New Moon.
It is conjunct Mars and Venus, square Saturn and Neptune, trine Chiron and Eris and quincunx Uranus (that’s the planet of surprise in an aspect of surprise!).
It signals a time of necessary, poignant and authentic action.
It might come as a surprise, travel might be required - or a different sort of pushing beyond our comfort zone and expanding our thinking and horizons might be in store. But healing will flow.
Jupiter, the ruler of this New Moon, squares Chiron exactly, emphasising again the need to make greater room in our lives for our authentic self. With Mercury square the Lunar Nodes too, some sort of important news, paperwork or communication might be coming.
Sagittarius is a seeker for truth, greener pastures and greater freedom. Plant the seeds that will help bring your vision to fruition.
Sagittarius New Moon Sabian Symbol for Contemplation: A fat boy mowing the lawn of his house on an elegant suburban street. The keyword here is ‘social respectability’ with an emphasis on doing things that are good for you (even if you don’t particularly fancy doing them).
